How to Transform an Old Military Area into a Peaceful Park Article by Irmak Bilir. http://landarchs.com/can-this-winning-design-revive-urban-connections/ Green Road, a peaceful park by  REDscape Landscape & Urbanism , Province of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Nobody would deny that no matter the results of a battle, a military area can be depressing. One of the best ways to transform such a site is to turn it into a park. But not an ordinary park — a park that shares its history with its visitors. Green Road does exactly that, in a project designed by REDscape, led by landscape architect Patrick Mc Cabe. A Breif History of Green Road Green Road  is a large military area in the Province of Utrecht, the Netherlands, which has housed a former defensive trench and bunker system since  1918 . The area was a defender of the  River Lek  for invasion from the east, and it was built for this purpose. It has forts, works, and a wide of variety of bu...

“Sustainable Urbanism: The Grand Unification”              “Our times offer an historic opportunity to rethink where and how we live, work, play, and shop. The path to a sustainable lifestyle builds on the principles of smart growth, new urbanism, and green buildings. If successful, it will not only reduce environmental harm, but also offer stunning enhancements to the current quality of life. The setting for this is sustainable urbanism, the creation and support of communities that are so well designed for a high quality of life that people will   eagerly opt to meet their daily needs on foot and transit. Compared to the    American lifestyle as we know it, the quality of a life lived in sustainable urbanism is healthier, happier, more independent and not least longer. What’s not   to like?           ...

by INHABITAT The Semiahmoo Library’s Larger Than Life Living Wall Features Over 10,000 Plants by  Tafline Laylin , 08/30/11 Share on Tumblr Email We've featured the amazing Semiahmoo Public Library  vertical garden  before, but our new pictures show even more clearly just how alive this wall really is. More than 10,000 individual plants representing 120 unique plant species cover so much wall space - a whopping 3,000 square feet - it's kind of surprising that the whole building doesn't keel over. Instead, Vancouver-based design firm  Green over Grey  has transformed the library's exterior into a totally self-sufficient (and structurally sound) green wall which actually enhances the interior environment while also supporting a  healthy urban ecosystem  that entices bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to come out and play! We’ve seen some pretty cool living walls,  inclu...
