The land has been cultivated for more than seven thousand years. Around 5,300 BC, the people of the Lepen Whirl culture began to expand from Djerdap, the biggest gorge in Europe, domesticating animals and starting to farm. STUDENT PROJECT | Natural Water as Cultural Water | Zhicheng Xu izvor:  http://worldlandscapearchitect.com/student-project-natural-water-as-cultural-water-zhicheng-xu/#.Upfd18RDvmc Time, space and culture have tremendous impacts on landscape. The power of them is so impressive that people would be amazed by things they can do to nature. In the meantime, it raises the question, in the field of contemporary landscape architecture, what is the balancing point between culture and nature? What gives a place its identity? How can we provide programs that fulfil pubic desires with minimum disturbance to existing natural system? Even further, I wonder if it is possible to use public infrastructure as an opportunity to solve these questions and restore the original ecological integrity. The project seeks to find the balancing point between culture and nature along the Wabash River in Lafayette, Indiana, which is currently underappreciated because of 1. Flooding 2. Vacancy 3. ...

The Semiahmoo Library’s Larger Than Life Living Wall Features Over 10,000 Plants

by INHABITAT The Semiahmoo Library’s Larger Than Life Living Wall Features Over 10,000 Plants by  Tafline Laylin , 08/30/11 Share on Tumblr Email We've featured the amazing Semiahmoo Public Library  vertical garden  before, but our new pictures show even more clearly just how alive this wall really is. More than 10,000 individual plants representing 120 unique plant species cover so much wall space - a whopping 3,000 square feet - it's kind of surprising that the whole building doesn't keel over. Instead, Vancouver-based design firm  Green over Grey  has transformed the library's exterior into a totally self-sufficient (and structurally sound) green wall which actually enhances the interior environment while also supporting a  healthy urban ecosystem  that entices bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to come out and play! We’ve seen some pretty cool living walls,  inclu...

Drylands Design - Students competition

Слика
Drylands Design Eligible:  students Register:  15 November 2011  / Submit:  15 December 2011 Registration fee:  none Competition Objectives + Priorities The purpose of Drylands Design is to generate a portfolio of long term design strategies for the arid and semi-arid west’s water-scarce future. Proposals must recognize and address: The Water-Energy Nexus The relationship between water, energy use, and heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions is intertwined and self-limiting; uncoupling water’s capture, treatment, distribution, and use from energy-intensive delivery systems is critical to a new western drylands design. Scarcity + Variability The twin effects of climate change on the American west’s hydrologic cycle are expected to be scarcity (prolonged drought periods and diminished snowpack) and variability (increased intensity of flood events). Design for variability will replace engineering for stationarity. Localized Resources Rain water, st...
