A CRUDE AWAKENING - the oil crash

Слика
http://www.oilcrashmovie.com/ OilCrash,  produced and directed by award-winning European journalists and filmmakers Basil   Gelpke and Ray McCormack , tells the story of how our civilization’s addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology. Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled. The idea that the world’s oil supplies have peaked, or will soon, is gaining mainstream currency.  Robert B. Semple, Jr., associate editor of the New York Times editorial board, writes in the paper’s March 1, 2006, online edition:  “The Age of Oil — 100-plus years of astonishing economic growth made possible by cheap, abundant oil — could be ending without our really being aware of it. Oil is a finite commodity. At some point even the vast reservoirs of Saudi Arabia w

a landscape in a landscape – international workshop

a landscape in a landscape – international workshop Considering the urban landscape of Bucharest as an overlapping of the vernacular projects over the official projects (I. Tudora) the workshop is intended to tackle the issues of a “typical site” for the city. The task is to find means of balancing local considerations with broader social and ecological concerns. Places are alive, as Robert Thayer put it: ‘for they grow, change, and decline with the individuals and groups who maintain or ignore them.” Landscape is not static; landscape is constantly on the move. And furthermore we recall James Corner, who states that:  “The landscape is itself a text that is open to interpretation and transformation.” There is no entry fee to this workshop and also the accommodation will be arranged for all the participants and will be covered by the organisation committee; you will be staying 5 minutes away from where the workshop will be taking place. The only expense you will incur as a

Urban Cactus by UCX Architects

Слика
Urban Cactus by UCX Architects Living in a building usually means you’ll have no access to your own garden, but the Urban Cactus which is a housing project located in Vuurplaat Rotterdam solves that. Each unit owner now gets a chance to grow his own vegetable garden or bask in glorious sunlight. This unusual piece of architecture was created by UCX Architects / Ben Huygen and Jasper Jaegers. It sits at the end of the harbor in Rotterdam and proves to standout amongst the rest of the urban architecture. This building contains 98 residential units in 19 floors. The concept of what seems like a stack of plates in an alternating pattern allows extreme amounts of exterior and garden space. The orientation of each floor also enables more natural light to enter into each unit. The architect’s website can no longer be found so not much can be extracted about how “green” this structure is in terms of architecture. It was noted that a lot of things can be done with a concept li
